Panthers Lose Both Starting Corners To IR

The Carolina Panthers lost a lot more that just the game this past Sunday in Cleveland. They also lost starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson. Jackson went down in the first half and was ruled out with a groin injury. Jaycee Horn went down late in the 4th quarter with what would later be a torn quad. According to head coach Dave Canales, Jacksons injury required surgery on Tuesday this week. Jaycee is lucky enough to avoid surgery on his quad. The unlucky part for both is that they end up on the Injured Reserve list.

Both players will have to miss at least four games before they are able to return to play but in the case of Horn and Jackson, Canales said they would miss 6-8 weeks of time. This is a major blow to a defense, which if you asked most Panther fans what was the strongest position group on defense, most would say cornerback.

Horn and Jackson were considered by most as one of if not the best cornerback duo in the NFL after the 2025 season. Teams did not throw Horns way much. Jackson overcame some early season struggles to have a nice run down the stretch last season as the Panthers won their first NFC South title since 2015.

What Happens Next?

The Panthers will likely turn to options that are either on the current 53 man roster and bring up players currently on the practice squad.

Panthers 2026 4th round pick Will Lee III, Akayleb Evans and Chau Smith-Wade were the last corners left at the end of the Cleveland game. This trio will more than likely be 1st on the depth chart going forward. Corey Thornton is a name to watch. Thornton won the starting nickel spot before a broken fibula ended his 2025 season. Expect him to be called up from the practice squad.

I don't know if we should expect the Panthers to make any trades or even sign any notable coners that are currently free agents. Carolina tends to want players who have some familiarity with defensive coordinator Ejiro Everos system. Only time will tell!

Let me know how you feel about our current cornerback crisis as I'm going to call it. As always Panther Nation, Y’all Be Good, Be Safe and Keep Pounding Mayne!!!
