James Bryant Jr - May 18, 2025
Back in 2022 the Panthers selected RT Ikem Ekwonu with the 6th overall selection in the NFL Draft. That same season Ickey was "BAPTIZED" into the NFL regular season by perennial pro bowler Myles Garrett in week 1. Now I bring this up because as most of you know the Panthers and Browns will have a joint practice this year ahead of their preseason opener here in Charlotte. As a lot of you might be thinking, yes it's only preseason but could this be a tone setter for not only the offense going in to the 2025 season but for Ickey as well.
Ekwonu is going into the fourth year of his rookie deal and being a first round pick the Panthers have to option of picking up his 5th year option which they did right before the 2025 NFL Draft. That option is fully guaranteed and worth 17.5 million. Ickey has proven to be solid in the Panthers run game but edge rushers with a quick first step have given him problems in the past. His first regular season game of his career was against Garrett and the Browns. Garrett made him look like a rookie on that day at Bank of America Stadium as he gave up 2 sacks and had a critical false start penalty late in the game. All this to say I hope Ickey has a chance to get some redemptions against Garrett. More than likely this will have to happen at the joint practices. There is no guarantee that either of them will play in the preseason opener. With fans not being allowed at training camp this year and next we will depend on our local media to keep us updated during this joint practice.
I hope he can gain something out of this to get him and the offense rolling fast out of the gate this season. Let me know if this could be "A Thing" for Ickey or is this just another joint practice and preseason game that won't mean much at all.
