Earlier today the Carolina Panthers released Edge/OLB Jadeveon Clowney. A move that surprised a lot of Panther fans and was not so surprising to others. Clowney who is a Rock Hill SC native signed a two year $20 million contract with the Panthers in the 2024 offseason. Clowney had a modest season with in 2024 with 46 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. This move frees up $7.7 Million towards the Panthers salary cap for the 2025 season that could be used to help with what many might say is a thin secondary especially at the Safety position.
With the Panthers taking edge rushers with back to back picks in the recent NFL Draft (Nick Scourton Round 2 Pick 51 & Princely Umanmielen Round 3 Pick 77) one would think that at the very least Clowney would be a valuable veteran presence for these rookies in the upcoming season. Well it looks like the Panthers have other plans and clearly an emphasis on adding young talent to the roster is one of said plans. Just take a look back at free agency where the oldest player the Panthers signed was ILB Christian Rozeboom who came over from the Los Angeles Rams.
Now this was definitely a smart move financially by the Carolina Panthers but will this move haunt them on the field in the upcoming season. Drop a comment below and let me know what you think.
